Advice required for 1st live game :)
Apr 13th, 2010, 2:03pm

hi you lot.

I'm playing in my 1ST EVER live game this upcoming Friday in a pub in the city centre (Glasgow) and was wondering if the VIP's can give me any advice, tips etc on how to prepare for this and anything i should take note of when the game is underway.

Currently 24 players for deffo maybe more so at the moment its either 3 tables of 8 or 4 tables of 6.

I have attached what i got sent onto me from the guy that's hosting it onto a word document so you can see the starting chips amount, time of level increase etc.

cheers guys/gals

any advice no matter how little would be really much appreciated by myself and I am really looking forward to Friday.  Happy as this can prepare me for the Glasgow leg of the SPT at the start of May which is less than a month away now.

The attachment box thingy ain't there for some reason. Smiley

So i have pasted what the attachment contained below:

Time

The game will start between 6:30pm - 6:45pm.  Please be there in plenty of time to start, and let me know when you arrive.
If you are not there when we start, we will start without you. You will be dealt cards and blinds will be paid in your absence. If you aren't going to make it or will be late please call me to let me know.
We will aim to end the game at around 11pm but no later than 11:30pm. If the game is still in progress then the winners will be the chip leaders at the end of the final hand.  I like to remind everyone this is a friendly game and as such any deals will now be restricted to between those in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and should be discussed only when 3 players are left.

Players
We have 24 players.  They are as follows:
Frame, Alistair
Goodwin, Steven (Capita)
Martin, Kenneth
Paterson, Gerry (Pearl)
Thomson, Brian
Thomson, Stephen
Graham, Hugh (Capita)
Fox, Thomas (Capita)
Blakely, Christopher
Findlay, Craig
McGuigan, Brian
McInnes, David (Capita)
Mitchell, Craig (Pearl)
Paterson, Craig (Pearl)
Thomson, Kris (Capita)
Walsh Joe
McDade, Steven (Capita)
Denham, Craig (Capita)
Flanagan, Ryan
Hook, Richard
Turner, Gary
Wilson, Mark (Capita)
Turner, Jo
Johnstone, Steven

Entry Fee
£22.50
£20 = 2500 chips
£2 = buffet (Nancy has kindly offered to provide a buffet from 5.00p.m.  I had planned to buy pizzas.  I'll get some for those coming a little later.)
£0.50 - towards cost of table.

If you have paid your entry fee and subsequently pull out then the onus is on you to provide another player, otherwise your Entry Fee is forfeit to the Prize Fund.

Tables

There will be 3 tables.
Table and Position relative to the dealer will be determined by picking cards at the outset.
Tables will be evened up through the course of the game until a single table remains.

Re-buy / Add-On
Within the first hour of play, if you have less than half your original chips and your current hand is dead you can request an re-buy. This will be 1250 chips for £10. Only 1 re-buy will be permitted per player. We will have a break at the end of the re-buy period - this will be your final opportunity. Strictly speaking this is neither a re-buy or add-on, it simply ensures that all unlucky players have the chance to stay in the game for at least an hour.

Blinds
The blinds will be increased every 20mins as per table below.   However, if the game starts later than planned or there are any other delays then we reserve the right to skip some of the higher levels to ensure the game is played to a conclusion on the night. the structure for the night is shown below.

Level      Small      Big
1      25      50
2      50      100
3      75      150
10 min break & end of rebuy / add-on period
4      100      200
5      150      300
6      200      400
     10 min break
7      300      600
8      500      1000
9      750      1500
     10 min break
10      1000      2000
11      1500      3000
12      2000      4000
13      3000      6000

Breaks
The plan is to have a 10 min break each hour to cater for smokers and get drinks in etc. You can leave the table at any time during the game providing your cards for the current hand are dead. Blinds will continue to be posted in your absence.
If you leave the table for a break etc.. your chips are your own responsibility. If you don't trust the suspect characters around you get someone to keep an eye on them in your absence. There will be no comeback.

Rules
It is assumed that you know how to play the game.
Prizes
Prize Fund = £20 x Players + ( add-on / re-buy ) money.
1st = 50%
2nd = 30%
3rd = 20%

Live is completely different you'll find. There'll be some great people there to have a laugh and there'll be tosspots who stare you down (ignore these people). You have longer to think in live play, easier to bluff as they think they can read, Hard to disguise the flopped nuts thought when you can't stop shaking  Grin Grin
You are a great player Denham so just enjoy the day  Wink

i think the best advise is play your game and enjoy yourself
dont get mad if some one donks you out just say nh (it annoys them more lol)
you will soon start to get the feel off the game and the players then just go with your instincts i say

but like kk said just enjoy win or lose

Getting a read on players, the range of hands they play, their betting structure is crucial and the more you practise the better you develop the skill to make better informed decisions, gather as much info as you can about your opponents. Wink Test  your judgements, see if they are good. You are a good player with the patience needed at times, trust yourself because I trust you, goooooo get em on friday!

hi all

Just home from my 1st live game.

Not as nervous as i thought when i arrived.

24 entrants - 3 tables of 8.

Overall I must say that it was a very organised tourney.

felt comfortable and settled in right away which i was pleased with. Took 1st hand with a cheeky wee bluff then must have went 10 hands with nothing.  Sat patiently. Just before the break i was on the BB with KQ suited everyone folded and a girl on the button pushed all in, she only had 400 or so chips, then the SB folded and i just called, she had pocket 10's which held up Sad lol.

Think there were only 4 out at the 1st break.  Couple of re-buys were made within the 1st hour for 1,2500 chips (starting stack was 2,500).  Quite alot of people tried to go under the 1,250 or below before the 1st break so they were able to add on.

I made then made it to 16 players left and we moved down to two tables of 8.

Quite an aggressive table i joined.  Some drunk idiot had a go at my hair, then when asking my name i stated 'Denham'.  He's like ok hi Denim, my names Nylon!  Sad  Just ignored the idiot cause i'll tell you how he went out later on  Grin.

Blinds up at 150/300 and i had AK suited (spades).  Nice flop for me with 2 spades on the but two jack's. Guy bets 500, 2 guys fold, i raised to 1k he called. Turn was a diamond (can't remind exact number but was a low card). His turn and he's asking how much i have left, i'm like 1.3k - so he put me all in.  Took a good 2-3mins to think about this.  He obv had the Jack for trips im thinking, and i had to hit any spade on the river for a flush. If not out i would have went.  Then i have the drunk guy across from me shouting call him, go all in, don't be a shitebag, im like ffs just shut up. I ended up folding btw and was down to just over 4 BB's.

Question - I was right to fold  there eh? For my tournament i didnt wanna rely on the river being a spade and if i never hit i would have been out.

Sad patiently for a bit then i got my hand of the night and on the BB, i got Pocket Jack's.  1 Guy called and went right round to the small blind also calling then i shoved.  Guy further round to my left folded and the SB called, showed cards and he had K7 os. Just had to avoid the K and i did so i got back up to just over my starting stack.

Then couple of hands down the line i was just calling with a decent hand and the flops were just awful, couldn't hit anything, high card after high card.

Then a massive pot right before the 2nd break. Raises, re-raises and two all ins QQ vs KK (The guy that was slagging my hair and that had the KK). Flop was nothing great, then the turn was a Q  Smiley.  Oh how i was smiling inside hehe. No King on the river btw lol.

So i made the 2nd break with 11 players left i believe.

So after the 2nd break the blinds are now at 300/600 and my stack was 1,225.  So basically 2 BB's and i was at the table of 5.  Hoping for a decent hand before the blinds came back round.  So there i was, got dealt A9 suited and pushed all in hoping to steal the blinds. SB folds, BB calls so im thinking small pair.  He showed his cards 1st A8 offsuit and im oooooo and showed my A9.  Then it happened  Cry. Great flop for me no 8 there. THEN THE TURN WAS A F***ING 8 - whole table just goes OHHHHHHH! I went your kidding me Sad.  River was like a King.  Out i went in 11th.  Everyone shook my hand and said good game etc.  Nothing I could have done there VIPs.  All I can say is the better hand lost Sad lol.

But i really really enjoyed it.  I'm more confident now for future live games and felt i was more up to scratch with what I was doing than I had anticipated.  So this has really made me happy.

So 11th out of 24 entrants.  Pretty pleased with that.

Smiley Smiley Smiley

anyway you lot i'm gonna head to my bed now and get a decent  sleep.  Got a BBQ tomorrow lunchtime then i'm off out in the evening for a big pub crawl with my mates int he city centre.

nite nite

xx

Great write up and well done! There's alwasy 1, or 2 or 3 even. I folded AK at the pub game on tuesday Denham, guy had stayed with my bets all the way through, he was first to act and pushed after the river card.. I had missed everything, so thought he must have some of it and then he showed the table the big bluff and actually gloated ! Thank you very much for that info dear i thought and I got such a great read of him and kept taking his chips with little smiles and when i took him out... well I am not one to gloat, but this was an exception  Grin Grin Grin

Well played, proud of you  Smiley

hiya

Thank you Tracy, Val & Jacqueline xxx

Yeah Tracy, the guy was really drunk and did apologise at the end of the night.  I don't mind anyway, it's only silly hair I have lol.

What an idiot that guy was at your tourney last Tuesday Val, gloating like that  Sad but excellent by knocking him out the tourney later on  Cheesy that just have felt great hehe  Smiley

Glad i done the right thing then and folded as i still had enough chips left for a few more blinds anyway and glad in your opinion i was right to fold my AK Jacqueline Smiley
